About the event
Eat With Our Eyes shows everyday food culture, depicting a wide range of food spaces, from supermarkets to wine bars. Through streetscapes, interiors, plated dishes, and depictions of patrons and staff, this is a celebration of the food culture vital to Melbourne. Through his works, Chu conveys an incidental sense of humour, as well as appreciation for human grit and fleeting moments of the sublime. As a cognitive scientist, his work intentionally links the senses, drawing attention to aesthetic elements beyond conventional beauty, such as public signage, electric wiring, and colours that rhyme. The central location of the Gallery at City Library makes for an ideal venue to showcase the city's food culture. Importantly, Chu's subjects come from a range of suburbs, including different food habits which encompass diverse lifestyles. The official launch is on Thursday 15 May, 5.30pm to 7pm.
